Styled Photo Shoot for Your Kent Wedding's 50th Golden Issue

Back in June, the week after Flossie Pops' first anniversary and two days after the end of the busiest week I'd ever had, I had the pleasure of being involved in a styled shoot.  Clair from Creative Brides, who I had met at the House Meadow open weekend in May, was coordinating two very different and interesting shoots to showcase Scotney Castle, a National Trust property, as a venue.

The brief was Gold.  Clair had created some great mood boards and Pinterest boards to help inform the team involved, but it was still a very open ended design process.  I loved the freedom to experiment, but the lack of boundaries made it just a little terrifying especially as would be working with seasoned professionals!

I decided to make a three tier cake and use the double height middle tier that I love and am slightly obsessed by at the moment.  With the decoration I was thinking about using texture and different shades of gold from bright and sparkly to more muted and antiqued.  I know Scotney Castle quite well, in fact I did my first ever cupcake decorating class with the pastry chef there, so it holds very fond memories indeed.  The shoot was taking place in the late afternoon and early evening to capitalise on golden light, so I decided to use the extensive and beautiful gardens with climbing roses, wisteria, meadows and woodland as inspiration.  I decided on fantasy flowers, edged with gold and with tiny gold pearl centres, based on a wild rose and created a textured, draped, wisteria effect with hand-painted discs of sugar paste on the middle tier (you can see the design on my previous blog post).  I was completely delighted when Rebecca photographed the cake right under the stunning white wisteria!

I also took along several other decorated cake dummies which we managed to use for other parts of the gold shoot and also a fun, vintage colourful shoot which has been featured on Under the Vintage Veil and the Dessy blog.

Watching how a shoot is put together was fascinating.  There was a big team - Clair from Creative Brides was coordinating with her assistant, Rebecca Douglas was the photographer, the two gorgeous models, real-life husband and wife Dan and Polly, Natalie the makeup artist, Liz the hair stylist, Jenny from BellaBoo and Beau styling and her assistant, Sam from Three Little Pixels created a video of the shoot (which can be seen here), Joanne Truby the florist, Amanda from Buttons Devine with really unique button bouquets, Linda Athey the stationery designer, the Scotney Castle team and I'm sure I've forgotten someone... We certainly got lots of exercise too as our office and base were near the car park and main house and the shoot took place at the old castle which is at the bottom of a big hill!

Here is the feature from the current issue of Your Kent Wedding - thanks to everyone for such an interesting experience and I'm genuinely excited to see a Flossie Pops cake in print for the first time.
